In the Chamber News:
The next regular meeting of the Bollinger County Chamber of Commerce will be 12:00 PM (Noon) on Thursday, June 13th, 2013, at the Marble Hill Senior Nutrition Center, located at 505 3rd St. Please join us as the chamber begins a new year. Help us to grow a stronger chamber and find new ways to promote our county and help provide for potential business growth. Door prizes awarded by the business sponsor of the month. Members and non-members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The agenda for February will include an update on the road conditions discussed at our January meeting, continued discussion on fundraising ideas for the chamber, and an update on the concept of "branding" for the chamber.

Missouri Employer Reporting Services

Missouri Employer Reporting Services assists employers with the federal and state new hire reporting requirements on behalf of the Missouri Department of Social Services, Family Support Division’s Child Support program. Please find attached important information about New Hire Reporting in the state of Missouri. It would be very helpful if you could share this information with your membership to increase general awareness of reporting laws and legal requirements for employers. New hire reporting expedites the collection of child support from parents who have changed jobs and helps to locate non-custodial parents to establish paternity and child support orders. We request that you distribute the information to your membership by including it in a newsletter article or placing it in a resource section on your website.

The attachment summarizes various methods of reporting and provides contact information for Missouri Employer Reporting Services. The Chamber Veteran Business of the Second Quarter is Bollinger County Abstract & Title Company, Inc.

Bollinger County Abstract, located at 101 Gilmore St. in Marble Hill, is owned by Donnia M. Besher. Bollinger County Abstract has a long history in our area. The office has been in existence since 1909. Donnia began working as the real estate closer for Judy Reilly, the previous owner, in 1996 and purchased the business in 1998. Donnia and her staff, which includes Carole A. Abernathy as Manager and Chief Title Examiner; Lonna Haimes as Closer/Processor and Charity Collier as Administrative Assistant are hard at work to assist you. When you need Abstracts, Title Insurance, insured closings, lien searches, escrow services or consultations remember Bollinger County Abstract & Title, Inc. Donnia says they bring over 70 years of experience to Bollinger County and the adjoining counties.

Q: How has the Abstract & Title business changed in recent years and what advances do you see it making in the future?
A: An abstract is the history of the property showing who all owned the property and what liens and mortgages were ever on it. Years ago the Abstract Office would bring an abstract of the property up to date and attorneys would read them and give an “attorney’s opinion” to existing and proposed land owners, but no insurance was issued. When Title Insurance came into force, attorneys began to discontinue the review of the abstracts. This began the process to allow coverage to the proposed owner for their purchase price and the lender, if any, coverage for their loan amount, in the event there was an error made in the search and exam of the legal description for an overlap of property lines, double chain of title, a missing heir or a lien missed that needed to be paid off at the time of an ownership transfer. Later to follow was the closing transaction process of a land exchange and/or mortgage of the property handled by the closing agent of the title office. Bollinger County Abstract is the only geographical indexed title plant in Bollinger County and one of the few “Title Plants” left in the state. We search and examine property by metes and bounds in a legal description, by section, township and range and not by address and name. Searching at a court house by name and address could result in missed deeds in the chain of title. In today’s life of urgency and expectations, this has led to opening of title offices that do not have the capabilities of, or resources for searching and examining that title plants consist of. This could bring possible errors in searching and examining of a legal description, which leads to a claim on the title and numerous exceptions on policies that leads to little or no insurance for the land owner and/or lender. With the new laws going into effect to protect the consumer, I predict the consumers/lenders taking more time to review their title work and asking more questions on each exception to insure they are getting the insurance coverage they need. I feel the integrity of the offices preparing the commitment to insure will be getting a second review on their procedures in searching and examining and insured closings to better protect not only the consumers, but the lenders as well.

Q: What challenges does your business face daily?
A: Daily challenges include keeping up with software updates and changes in policies and procedures with the recording system and title and closing laws. Working as a “Team” in keeping the plant posted up to date on a daily basis and keeping lenders and realtors informed with changes in the industry. We consider challenges as a call to engage in a path of strength and skill to endure a sense of security to those we meet and work with in our adventure to succeed.

Q: What is your favorite part of your business?
A: That we learn something new every day and that we have the privilege to meet new and exciting people.

Q: How can people best be prepared when they come to your business seeking your services?
A: To remember to ask questions. That is what we are here for is to prepare and guide them through one of the most exciting times of their life.

Q: What professional organizations do you belong to?
A: Bollinger County Abstract is currently certified with the State of Missouri as a Woman-Owned Business Enterprise. We are currently members of Missouri Land Title Association, Missouri Association of Professional Title Agents and American Land Title Association, National Association of Federal Independent Businesses, Bollinger County Chamber of Commerce, Missouri Association of License Offices, Workforce Investment Board Member.

A: As a past President of the Chamber, I see the important things the Chamber can bring to our community. They are a very important part of involvement with each and every business in the County. McCain Screen Printing & Bollinger County Chamber ~ Adopt a Pole Program:

It was suggested at a chamber meeting that we put up some flags around the county and so we are starting an "adopt a pole" program.

We would print something like Welcome to Marble Hill, Leopold, Zalma etc., along with some artwork and then whoever sponsored the pole would have their name at the bottom of the flag.

The flags are 24" X 36", full color and can be printed on 1 sided ($46.40) or 2 sided ($72.50) along with a $25 art/screen charge and shipping (depending on how many you wanted to sponsor)... The flag/pole hardware is $60 for 1 sided and $95 for 2 sided (plus shipping), but once we have the hardware installed on a pole, you won't have that cost again.

We would like to get some of these flags up in every town in Bollinger County to welcome in people. We are eventually wanting to have one for each season, (spring, winter, Christmas, fall and of course deer and bow hunting seasons).
If you think you would be interested in sponsoring one for your town, please contact Sherrie McCain at McCain Screen Printing and I will start a list. We can get a volume discount depending on how many we buy. Remember a set of the hardware must also be purchased when getting the flags unless you already have hardware on a pole or if you can figure out another way to mount them.

We are also trying to get some specialty advertising products out into different stores and gas stations to promote and advertising our communities and county... Invites all Missouri Artisans to take part in the MO Artisan Show/Sale

The Bollinger County Museum announces our Missouri Artisan Show/Sale at the Show Me Days Event on Saturday, May 18, 2013. If you are a Missouri Artisan and would like to take part in this day please contact the museum at 573-238-1174 to register. Registration and space is free to all Missouri Artisans. Each artisan or craftsman or craftswoman must provide their own tables, etc. Various Missouri artisans will display and sell their work on the lawn of the Bollinger County Museum during Show Me Days. Show Me Days is an annual event the museum uses to showcase different aspects of our Missouri culture. This year we are putting the spot light on our fine artists and craftsmen and women of Missouri. May 18 will be our Annual Show Me Days at the Bollinger County Museum. The SEMO Explorer bus will be on the museum parking lot with the NASA: Spirit of Discovery bus. The SEMO Explorer Bus is a 38 foot long mobile teaching and learning center. Exhibits and activities are geared to grades 3-6, but enjoyable for all ages. The displays include artifacts and over 40 models that trace NASA’s unmanned and manned space exploration. The bus will be open from 10am-4:30pm. Admission to the bus is free.

Other activities of the Show Me Days will include:
Missouri Artisan Show/Sale – Saturday, May 18th, 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Various Missouri artisans will display and sell their work on the lawn of the Bollinger County Museum. Smithsonian Museum Day Live is a nationwide event where participating museums and cultural institutions across the county offer free admission on September 28, 2013 to anyone presenting a Museum Day Live Ticket. Bollinger County Museum of Natural History will participate in this annual event. Check back for new details on special programs for the day.

Chamber Business of the Year:

Bollinger County Chamber of Commerce 2012 Business of the Year Award was presented to Tri-City Senior Citizens Club, Inc. (Marble Hill Senior Citizens Nutrition Center) on November 2, 2012.

Arthritis Exercise Classes
Arthritis Foundation Exercise Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday from 9:30am-10:30am and Fridays from 8:30am-9:15am. Classes are open to all age groups. Classes are fun and free and provide a low impact relief for joint pain and stiffness. For more information and to register please call the Bollinger County Health Center at 238-2817 or toll free 866-338-2817. Classes take place at the Marble Hill Senior Center located at 505 3rd St. in Marble Hill.

Bingo at the VFW Hall

Every Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. Located on County Road 502 (Opossum Creek Rd.) Sorry No One Under 16 years of age allowed.

Cross Trails Medical Center

Cross Trails Medical Center welcomes new doctor to their Marble Hill Clinic. Dr. Jared Flood will join Dr. Doyle and Susan Farrow, FNP. Dr. Flood practices adult medicine. Clinic hours are Monday - Friday, 8a.m to 5p.m. Location - 109 Highway 51 N. Marble Hill. Call 573-238-2725 for appointment.

Medicare Assistance:
The Senior Nutrition Center in Marble Hill has a representative to help with Medicare questions for individuals in Marble Hill available at the nutrition center from 8 a.m. to noon every Tuesday. If your problems are lengthy, please make an appointment by calling 238-2809.

Recycling Project:

The Bollinger County Recycling Project meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Bollinger County Library. The public is invited. Anyone who wants to volunteer at the recycling center on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. may call Donna Aufdenberg at 238-2420. Volunteers for Saturdays should call Paula Bridges at 238-4612.
